A highly rare and special pair of "Bird's Nest" earrings designed by legendary jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co.
These earrings center cabochon turquoise buttons which are held in place by six prongs. This central motif, representing robin's eggs, is surrounded by six segments of four strands of gold each, these segments each set with two round brilliant diamonds, these resembling the twigs composing the bird's nest.
Jean Schlumberger, one of the most famous jewelry designers of the 20th century, was a Frenchman living in New York, and got his big break with the financially limitless patronage of Rachel (Bunny) Lambert Mellon after his start designing costume jewelry for Schiaparelli and others. For Mrs. Mellon, the ultimate arbiter of art and good taste in the 20th century, Schlumberger designed some of his most famous pieces, including the "Breath of Spring" necklace and the jellyfish moonstone brooch. Jewelry aficionados will also know him for the "Bird On a Rock" which Tiffany & Co. still proudly produces today, in addition to his enamel and gem-set bangles made famous by Jackie Kennedy & Mrs. Mellon.
